I think most people know by now that dairy, processed/refined foods as well as sugar cause acne. These foods cause acne by increasing the turnover of skin cells and excessive oil production leading to clogged pores as well as oily skin. Hence, causing inflammation and pimples.
How can you treat acne effectively?
1. Eat Foods That Are Whole and Unprocessed.
You are what you eat. It has come to many people’s realisation that eating whole food and unprocessed food is one of the main reasons for acne which is due to the high glycemic index, hydrogenated fats, sugar and white flour content. A study conducted in Korea shows that junk food causes acne, risks of acne and severity of acne (June et. al., 2010).
2. Avoid Dairy Products.
It has been found in a study by Spencer et. al. in 2009 that dairy products are positively correlated to acne and its severity.
3. Eat Raw Cacao
Yes, you read correctly. Raw
cacao is high in Vitamins A, C and E, and Zinc – all necessary for skin healing naturally. Raw cacao is also extremely high in antioxidants and has inflammatory characteristics which are all good for your skin (Latif, 2013). Note that raw cacao is different from chocolate since there is high levels of milk and sugar in chocolate.
