Dear Gracy: Getting used to Quinoa’s Texture & Taste

29th August 2017

Dear Gracy,

I’ve never tried Quinoa before, but after hearing so much about its benefits, I do want to give it a try. My concern is that I won’t get used to the taste and texture of the seeds as it does look quite different to rice, and I don’t want to waste my money just in case I don’t like it. What should I do?

Thanks,
Felicia

Dear Felicia,

That is a very common concern for someone new to Quinoa! Our suggestion to slowly familiarize yourself with Quinoa is to start off by mixing it with your rice. Quinoa cooks exactly like rice, using the same amount of water as rice and can be cooked in a rice cooker too. I suggest cooking a 1:1 ratio of rice to quinoa to begin with, and the more you get used to the texture of quinoa, the more you can increase the amount of Quinoa you cook compared to rice.

In terms of taste, Quinoa has a very neutral flavor like rice, although it is slightly nuttier. It still does go along with a lot of different foods though, which makes it the perfect side dish.

If you want to jump fully into the quinoa bandwagon straight away, you can try our Asian Quinoa Packs, because it cooks in two simple steps (no rinsing necessary) and the familiar Asian-inspired flavors will peak your tastebuds in the best way possible. The texture of Quinoa is actually more similar to rice than you’d think. You’re sure to fall in love with these superfood seeds immediately!

Your Superfriend,
Gracy
