Making the most out of Social Media
In February earlier this year, Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive of Facebook, shared in a presentation in Barcelona that the average Facebook user spends a whopping 50 minutes a day across Facebook’s social media platforms – this includes Facebook, Instagram and Messenger[1]. While that does not seem like a lot of time intuitively, if we consider that there are only 24 hours in a day and Singaporeans spend approximately 7.5 of them sleeping[2] and maybe 1 hour on each of our 3 meals, that means that 6% of the rest of our time is spent on social media. Considering that we still have a myriad of other activities in our lives, that is a lot of time!
However, the purpose of this article is not to discourage our readers from using these genius creations. In fact, given this day and age where everything including shopping is going online, to a large extent we would argue that social media cannot be totally separate from our lives. On the other hand, us here at Superlife Co. would like to advocate its use – if we are wise about it, we can integrate social media into our lives meaningfully in ways that benefit us.
For instance, on Facebook, consider actively liking pages that discuss topics of interest to you – doing so will allow you to always be one step ahead of the common man when it comes to these things (e.g. how our Superlife community already knew about the risk of consuming white rice way before mainstream media caught up with this information). Do also join groups that allow you to meet like-minded people which will spur you to do things you set your mind on – such as joining yoga interest groups if you have recently decided to attend yoga classes.
On Instagram, follow accounts that beam with positivity; follow accounts which photos encourage you to choose good thoughts and pursue the better things in life. These accounts don’t necessarily have to have large followings – if their posts make you feel good, they’re worth following. Also, do ‘like’ posts that resonate with you, as you may forge precious connections with your followers should they see that you have ‘liked’ a post that they also find meaningful. Do consider (thoughtfully) commenting on pictures as well, as this may spark thoughtful conversations.
